JOSEP AMAT. THE HUMANISATION OF NATURE

Curated by Assumpció Cardona, the exhibition comprises nearly thirty landscapes that Josep Amat i Pagès (Barcelona, 1901–1991) painted. The Humanisation of Nature depicts a vision of nature that is not truly wild but rather has been altered by human intervention. The artist shows landscapes that have been altered and shaped, including mountains with open paths, cultivated fields, and environments that have been modified to be more accessible and practical. Ultimately, it is a tamed nature that shows how people live and act.

Josep Amat was a distinguished urban and rural landscape painter who maintained an artistic career that lasted for seventy years. The concept of nature on a human scale, a recurring art subject in his paintings, is the main focus of this exhibition.

The exhibition is divided into two closely linked areas that share thematic and compositional parallels. The first area depicts a dominated and domesticated nature, while the second area highlights the naturalized city. In this manner, boulevards and urban promenades correspond to the paths adorned with plane trees, and city parks and gardens to the agricultural fields.

The title of the exhibition is derived from the commemoration of the 1000th anniversary of the Monastery of Montserrat, a significant milestone in the humanisation of the mountain.
