31 / 03 / 2026

This March, you can view the artwork Light (1994) by Josep Lluís Arimany in the Storage Room Insight, which was donated to the museum in 1994 by the artist.

Josep Lluís Arimany was a renowned paediatrician and Catalan painter with a naturalistic and realistic style, great technical skill, and a solid mastery of drawing.

The main themes he explored in his paintings were portraits and human figures, while other genres, such as still lifes and landscapes, occupied a secondary place in his work. This dedication to figurative art and portraiture made him a specialist capable of conveying the personality of his subjects or depicted figures (men, women, and children) with great precision.

Nevertheless, in Arimany's work, the backgrounds of his paintings often take on an abstract character. They are usually executed using a wide variety of colours and materials, although we also find neutral and dark backgrounds, such as the one seen in Light. Here, we can appreciate a colour palette of blues, greys, and blacks, dominated by the light entering through the window, which brings a special luminosity to the scene and, above all, allows us to appreciate the female figure he is painting.

The artist received numerous awards, and his work is preserved in various collections in Europe and the United States. In Montserrat, visitors can also see the Pietà of Montserrat in the basilica.
